Design Tip: Shop in the Wrong Department
When you are looking for a product, it is important to look in the wrong department. If you shop the department where the product is sold, you will end up with one that looks just like everyone else’s.
There are some interesting options for furniture and accessories waiting for you in electrical, plumbing, flooring, and other departments.
For example, if you want to build a stair rail, don’t look in the department that actually sells stair spindles. If you have an eye for modern design, you will be sorely disappointed with the selection available at Home Depot. So look in the wrong department.
I modernized my stair rail by taking down the traditional turned wooden spindles and replacing them with electrical metal conduit. It costs just a few bucks for an 8-foot section and it can make a huge difference in the feel of the room (full project coming soon).
